So far, success with UniversityDude hasn’t been that great, but my other blog is booming. How I went from 0 to 22k visitors in only 4 months.
So right now I am working on a couple different sites. This is one of the sites that I’m working on and this is also probably one of the blogs that I neglect the most. I have not put in enough time to market UniversityDude and I also don’t have a ton of options on marketing this site either.
HOWEVER, one of my other blogs has bloomed wonderfully. I started that one around April and now it is a 22,000 visitor per month blog. Here’s the image of my Google Analytics account.

So what is the real difference between this blog and my other blog?
From the stats the main difference is that the users are finding my other blog in the search engines and they ARE not looking at UniversityDude. There’s definitely a few reasons for this. You should take these factors into consideration when you are writing YOUR blog.
1) UniversityDude lacks “viable” keywords – In short I entered a market that was heavily saturated. Making money for students and college blogs are a dime a dozen and thats why its going to be hard to find my blog in the search engines.
2) Lack of focus – My other blog focuses on exactly one thing whereas UniversityDude focuses on too many different things. For example, I’m writing about profitting off websites in one post and poker in another. This causes the search engines to not know what the hell my site is really about and writes it off as “less relevant” as other blogs who write about the same things.
3) Domain name – My other blog has an awesome domain name that has the topic actually in the domain. This blog has the words “University” and “Dude” in the domain. Not good.
4) Lack of work – I slacked off for about 2 months without writing any good content on here. I had actually decided to forget about UniversityDude since it wasn’t profitting at all (but since the hosting is free thanks to my friends at AmpedAsia I decided that I atleast should work on it a little bit.
So does that mean I’m going to quit UniversityDude? No because this blog is an actual personal blog and those are very healthy for one to maintain. I don’t care that no one reads my stuff except for the six loyal subscribers that I have. All I care about is letting my thoughts flow and charting my progress financially and also professionally. Doing all this while blogging will definitely help me out in the long run, and plus I’m getting better writing skills as I do it.

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve worked my butt off for 2+ years on ZenCollegeLife.com and still don’t see numbers like that.
Not that I haven’t, in fact I have had months that were more than quadruple that (Digg and StumbleUpon can cause some crazy spikes), but generally I’m closer to between 12k and 20k.
I think the college niche is just a harder one to build big numbers with.

yeah Ibrahim, it totally seems like the college niche is very hard to target.
