Started waiting tables as a part-time job. It is an exhausting, but also very rewarding job and I’ll reveal my reasons why in this post. Waiting tables is a great summer business job and just a great job overall especially for a student.
Waiting tables so far has been a great part-time job opportunity for me. Although I’m not making a lot of money, it’s still a nice little extra bit of dough. Although I’m already making money online, extra money doesn’t hurt. But what I’ve really gained from this experience is a LOT.
1) Waiting tables has helped me to meet a lot more people. I’m really digging the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. I’m even learning a bit of Spanish from one of the busboys.
2) Waiting tables is helping me to communicate better. Although I have a girlfriend at the moment, I have no doubt that waiting tables would help my game too. My friend Anthony, who works at the restaurant that I work at, told me this. His game is off the charts now that he’s working at our restaurant. And I’ve found this to definitely be true. I can talk better, crack funnier jokes, make conversations more entertaining, now that I’ve got experience as a waiter.
3) I’m Having Fun. Waiting is fun. I love so many aspects about it. It’s not difficult. It’s not stressful (ok, sometimes it is). It’s just a lot of fun.
4) Memorization skills are better. I’ve realized that I can memorize things a lot easier now than at the beginning. After taking people’s orders and having to memorize who ordered what when it comes to splitting checks or putting the orders in the computer, I’m doing things much faster and much more from memory.
5) Good source of start-up income. Waiting is probably the best job you can get as a student. Use the money you’ve saved here to help make your own business and start really raking in some money.
Now for the downsides of waiting.
1) It’s not going to make you rich. Like I said, waiting is good start-up income, but it won’t make you rich. Use the little money you make to invest in other projects. Let your money grow.
2) Grumpy customers. Can ruin your day.
There you have it. Consider being a waiter/waitress and earn some extra cash this summer and next semester!
