Things you can do on the weekend for free

So I read this post over at the Simple Dollar, which is truly a great blog, about how to have a money-free weekend. A lot of those ideas are good, but frankly, most of them are for the older generation. So here is my own list of things you can do on a money-free weekend as a college student.

Guidelines for this list were that you can’t spend a single penny, but it assumes you have basic things like TV, computer, and a cellphone.

1) Torrent a game, play it for free – It’s illegal I know, but what can I say, it’s free and a lot of College students do it. Not me of course.

2) Actually find a free game and play it for free – There’s a lot of free games out there that you can play, most of them of the MMORPG variety.

3) Find a house party – Most college towns will have house parties every weekend. Actually scratch that, because I haven’t been to most college towns. But its never been a problem for me to find a place to party every weekend. Maybe that’s where being in a frat comes in handy.

4) Go Volunteer – Always a good idea to join organizations that provide volunteering opportunities, and if you’re not in one, go seek out volunteer opportunities yourself. It’s a great resume-booster and also can help you meet other people who are also volunteering. Make friends and perhaps get a date?

5) Get the pals together and play video games – Host a Modern Warfare 2 tournament. Winner gets bragging rights.

6) Redbox a movie - It’s a dollar per night. So it’s not free but it’s the closest thing to free.

7) STUDY – seriously, if you’ve got no money, might as well brush up on some schoolwork. Come on, you know we all have some.

Eight) Watch videos on youtube – There’s a lot of free content on Youtube that is very entertaining, yet free. Check out the list of most subscribed videos. There are other things I like watching too, such as re-runs of David Letterman, Conan O Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, etc.

9) Work on your blog – If you haven’t made a blog yet you really should. It’s pretty rewarding to create a blog and write down some of your thoughts. Then looking back and going through your old posts is great.

10) Get a part-time job on the weekends – If you don’t have time during the weekdays, it’s nice to have a job for the weekend. Getting some extra income is always welcome.

11) Join a club that meets on the weekend – If you go to college then you must have tons of organizations on school that would be very beneficial to join. A lot of them are free at my college, but for others you might have to pay an initial fee so they can keep the organization going.

12) Learn a new skill – There are many things you can learn if you dedicated a couple hours on your weekend to it. A new language perhaps? Maybe learn how to play poker (definitely profitable if you can dedicate time to it)? And there are tons of resources on the web that will let you learn for free.

13) Go to the gym - My school has a free gym, and I understand that not all school’s have that. I do think that most of them do, but in case yours doesn’t, then this one doesn’t apply to you. Go lift weights, go play some racquetball/basketball/ping pong, do cardio.

14) Jot down ideas for a small business - I’m always thinking about new business ideas, online or offline. This has given me some financial stability, although what I really want is financial freedom.

15) Watch something on HULU - Like on Youtube, Hulu has stuff for just about anyone.

16) Are you getting laid? – Then get laid on the weekend (Don’t argue that you need to buy the condom, most schools actually give them out for free at their health center).

17) Are you not getting laid? – Then figure out how to get laid.

18) Check out if your school has any free events for the weekend - I go to a fairly large school and we usually have free entertainment events every weekend such as concerts, free movie screenings, cultural showcases (with free food), and more.

19) Read a book – Check one out at your local library. No seriously. Reading is good for you. If that’s not your thing you’ll likely find that you can also find DVDs at your library for borrowing.

20) Watch the game with your buddies – There are sports every weekend on TV, and if you don’t have a TV, I’m sure your campus has some social lounge or area where you can watch TV. Or perhaps do it at your friend’s apartment.

And that’s my 20 things you can do in a money-free weekend. Hope you enjoyed them, and if you have any more ideas, please feel free to let me know! beamer AT universitydude.com
